Wii hits five-month streak with May hardware sales

Port Washington (NY) - The Wii steamrolled its way into first place again last month, selling more units than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined.

NPD reports that around 338,000 Wii consoles were sold last month. The Xbox 360 added 155,000 units to its tally, while the PS3 remained in third place with 82,000. It's the same ranking that has been seen every month so far this year.

On the portable console front, Nintendo outsold Sony by nearly two-to-one. 423,000 DS units were sold, compared to 221,000 PSPs.

Pokemon Diamond took the top spot in the game sales charts for May, for the second month in a row. The new Mario Party 8 Wii title took second. Spider-Man 3 for the PS2 came in at #3 and was the only non-Nintendo title to make the top five, which was rounded out by Pokemon Pearl and Wii Play.

With its one year head start, the Xbox 360 remains the top-selling next-gen console in terms of lifetime sales. Around 11 million 360 units have been sold since its 2005 introduction, compared to around 7.6 million Wii consoles and 3.3 million PS3s.

Τα πραγματα ειναι μαυρα για το PS3 που με την ιδια σχεδον ημερομηνια launch εχει τις μισες πωλησεις απο το 360.

Πιστευω οτι το "σηριαλ" Wii καπου θα τελειωσει...για πολλους λογους.

Αλλωστε δεν θα ηθελα και οι αλλοι ανταγωνιστες (οπως εχω ξαναγραψει) να υιοθετησουν και αυτοι το μοντελο "no development-easy money-big profit" και να παιζουμε σε κανα 2 χρονακια με τιποτα αναπηρα 8600 overclocked κονσολακια...

Η εποχη που το NES κραταγε, λογω πωλησεων, την τεχνολογια πισω εχει περασει...

Να σου πω ότι έχω να ανάψω το gaming rig κανά 10ήμερο και λοιώνω στην DS?

Μεταξύ μας, όσο κι αν δεν μου αρέσει το Wii, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να έρθει ποτέ δεύτερο σε πωλήσεις. Θέλεις η χαμηλή τιμή, που θα πέσει κι άλλο σε λίγο, θέλεις το ότι απευθύνεται σε "παρθένο" gaming κοινό, δεν θα σταματήσει να πουλάει. Περιμένω να το βρω τσιπαρισμένο στην Ελλάδα, να το πάρω για την τιμή των όπλων.

Nintendo Wii outsells PS3 6 to 1 in Japan in June

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii game console outsold Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of over 6 to 1 in June in Japan, a game magazine publisher said, solidifying Nintendo's lead.

Nintendo sold 270,974 units of the Wii in the four weeks ended June 24, compared with 41,628 units for the PS3 and 17,616 units for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, according to data from Enterbrain.

The Wii's lead against the PS3 was 4 to 1 in April and 5 to 1 in May.

The Wii's strong performance, coupled with continued brisk demand for Nintendo's portable game gear, the DS, helped the Kyoto-based company shoot past Sony in market capitalization last week and become one of Japan's 10 most valuable companies.

Shares in Nintendo were up 0.2 percent at 45,200 yen by late morning on Monday, while Sony, a company with sales eight times as big as Nintendo's, fell 0.3 percent to 6,310 yen.

The Nikkei average was down 0.19 percent.

The Wii has won more customers than its two rivals since its Japanese launch late last year by offering innovative ways of playing console games.

The device features a motion-sensitive controller that allows users to direct on-screen play by swinging it like a baseball bat or wielding it like a sword, opening a new avenue of game playing.

Sony, which has dominated the $30 billion global game industry over the past decade with its PlayStation and PlayStation 2, saw a slow start for the PS3 due mainly to its high prices and lack of attractive software titles.
