This rare French trivia game from the 1870's is a colorful, fun trip around the world exploring Earth's mountain peaks, volcanoes and famous balloon ascents.
Four people can play, and each chooses a ship with one of four national flags, including the American flag. Two of the sailing ships are square-riggers, the other two are square-rigged hybrids of sail and steam. A player earns points by knowing the information about the feature on which the ship lands. Landing on a volcano, without knowing the information listed on the square, results in a loss of the player's points.
Besides mountains and active volcanoes, there are balloons identified by country and pilots, which are all actual historical, recorded ascents.
The original box top is included. There is some damp staining on the outside of the paper-covered wooden box, but the game surface and the ships are in good condition.
The game board is printed by chromolithography, the ships are hand-made, the central globe is lacquered paper over tin and the pointers on which the ships are mounted are made of wood tipped with brass arrows. The spinner is a horizontal brass lever on the front side of the game board.
The game includes a free-of-charge, high-quality glass, brass and wood display case custom made for it in 1990 by a respected Vermont cabinetmaker.
The dimensions of the display case are listed in the section below. The actual game box measures 17.38"W x 18"D x 6.63"H without the top; with the top the overall measurements are 17.38"W x 18"D x 6.75"H. Shipping weight is 32 pounds including the case; 7 pounds without the case. I strongly recommend white glove shipping.
