Blu-ray camp claims 70% market share in movie sales
Monday, April 23, 2007 10:18

Hollywood (CA) – Last week, we learned that more than 100,000 CE HD DVD players have been sold within the first twelve months of the technologyʼs launch. The Blu-ray Disc Association follows up this week by claiming that it is outselling HD DVD by a factor of “nearly” 3:1.

Comparing the numbers provided by each group remains speculation, as both continue to highlight certain successes and not their general market position. At least, we now know that HD DVD is beating Blu-ray in CE player sales, while Blu-ray claims to have achieved a dominance in HD movie sales. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association and Home Media Research, Blu-ray Disc sales accounted for a good 70% of the high-definition movies sold during the first quarter of 2007.

“Blu-ray disc titles accounted for eight of the top ten selling high definition titles in the first quarter of this year and since the introduction of both high definition formats, seven of the top ten selling high definition movies are on Blu-ray Disc,” the group wrote in a press release.

Overall, more than 1 million Blu-ray discs have been shipped so far – a number that has been boosted by free giveaways such as Talladega Nights and Casino Royale, which have been included with certain PS3 shipments. Casino Royale alone has been shipped more than 100,000 times.

HD DVD says it is still in the game, pointing to hardware price cuts and upcoming titles, and the fact that HD DVD sales currently stand at 998,059 units.
Earlier this month, some HD DVD player prices were slashed to $400, pushing some online retailers to mark them down to as low as $300, almost half the price of the cheapest Blu-ray player.

Additionally, a collector's edition of The Matrix will be exclusively released on HD DVD this summer, though a Blu-ray version is on tap for later in the year. The HD DVD camp also says many pre-orders were placed for the HD DVD release of BBC's Planet Earth documentary series, which came out alongside an identical Blu-ray version of the same show.

The group also combatted Blu-ray hardware sales figures, saying standalone HD DVD players were outselling standalone Blu-ray players (e.g. non-PS3 players) by a margin of 4-to-1.

HD DVD group says outselling Blu-ray in Europe

HD DVD video players have outsold rival standard Blu-ray players by a three-to-one margin in Europe's main markets so far this year, according to a lobby group.

The European HD DVD Promotional Group claimed it had 74 percent market share in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland for stand-alone players, citing sales figures it commissioned from market research group GfK.

The figures were for stand-alone players only and did not include sales of games consoles such as Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which contains a Blu-ray player.

Samsung to launch second dual-format blue-laser disc player in Q4 07
Samsung Electronics, at an IFA (Internationale Funhausstellung in German) conference held in Hamburg, Germany last week, announced it will launch the Duo HD (high-definition) BD-UP5000, the world's second dual-format disc player model supporting both HD DVD and BD (Blu-ray Disc) next to the LG Electronics BH100. The device will be initially introduced in the European market at a tentative price of 400 Euro ($545) in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

"New details emerge on Star Trek: TOS HD DVD

We know, the wait is most definitely not enjoyable, but here's a few more details to hopefully tide you over until Star Trek: The Original Series is finally launched on HD DVD. Reportedly, the disc will feature "never-before-seen footage exclusive to the next-gen edition," including behind the scenes 8-millimeter footage taken during the original production of the show. Additionally, it's being hinted that the studio is planning to give Comic-Con attendees a "first peek" at the long-awaited release on July 26 at a special event, and while there's still no word on this title making its way to Blu-ray, we'd be fairly surprised if it didn't make the jump in due time."

E3: Peter Moore: HD-DVD's Death Greatly Exaggerated

"If they want to have an opinion about something that's 10 years down the road, that's fine," said Moore, regarding Microsoft's commitment to the 360. "I don't want to get into a sparring match with them over this," he continued, but mentioned that speculation about the future is nothing more than that - speculation.

On the topic of HD-DVD, Moore was largely bullish. "On that mark I look forward to speaking with you at, say, CES next year," he began. "I was just looking at HD-DVD numbers over the weekend, and I think Toshiba may have an opinion about that."

"Of course, the fact that Sony has an economic interest in making sure that itʼs dead is interesting. I think his comments will be read with interest by folks in the European Union, and looking at the tactics the Blu-Ray forum has been using to ensure that retailers do things their way. Letʼs just look at what happens this holiday. I think itʼs kind of a preposterous statement. Within months? No."
