Creating Intent of Mizuki-sensei
The original story creator of Candy Candy, Kyoko Mizuki (real name: Keiko Nagita), affirmed in some official interview that her intent of writing the Candy story was NOT to tell the story of how an orphan searching for her parents. Rather, she wanted to create a story of how an orphan could strive her life despite her tough situation.
The author lost both of her parents at very young age (at different time period). She was in grief and pain until she had written the Candy story. Expressing herself in a character much similar to her own background from this particular point of view had cured and released her pain.
Note:
This is an important fact! It does NOT matter if Candy finds her parents or who her parents are! Many a time we heard some nonsense about Candy and Anthony being siblings, i.e. both were kids from Rosemary – sister of Albert. Remember that many remarks were made in the manga that Candy's green eyes resemble those of Rosemary.
Anthony thought that Candy's eyes look like his mother's eyes.
Archie claimed that Candy's eyes look like those of Anthony's mom.
Albert recalled her sister's eyes while Candy spent some time with him in Lakewood after he saved her from the waterfall.
All the incidents above are merely REMARKS about how both Candy and Rosemary had green emerald eyes, and most of all, they both had the same shine, kindness, brightness, friendliness, etc. And, Anthony was only four months younger than Candy! There is by no means they were siblings or twins!!! (data sheet is provided officially during the Japanese manga series)
Ardlay /Andrew Family Tree
A family tree is announced for this family. Different versions exist but this is the one announced on the author's site.
The head of the Ardlay clan (two generations before Albert, i.e. his grandpa) had three children:
Grandma Elroy (eldest daughter)
Albert's father
A younger sister.
Albert's father had two kids: Rosemary and Albert. Rosemary had a boy, i.e. Anthony.
The younger sister had a daughter. This daughter was the mother of Stear and Archie.
Note that Albert was thus the only boy who could be the direct heir from his father. By the way, the parents of Albert died when he was quite young. That's why he was very close to his sister.
Grandma Elroy had a kid. This kid had a daughter, which was Mme Leagan/Legrand. It means that Mme Leagan was Elroy's grand-daughter and the god damned Neil & Eliza were her great-grandchildren.
Note:
This is another important fact! We can push away all the rumors about Rosemary having two other sisters and Candy being the daughter abandoned by one of them, blabla nonsense!
About George/Johnson
This right hand of Albert, why was he so loyal to Albert? There are two main reasons.
First, he was very faithful and thankful to Albert's father. In fact, he was also an orphan. He was French. Once, Albert's dad went to France for business affair. George was a teenager doing nothing but stealing. He stole the wallet of Albert's dad but got caught red-handed. But then, this Ardlay head noticed that the boy was smart and felt sympathetic towards him. So he brought him back to US and provided him a home, good education, love, etc. So George was very thankful to him. Before he passed away, the Ardlay head had asked George to take care of the young Albert and helped him through. George swore his faith to Albert since then.
Second, George was secretly in love with Rosemary. He was so much in love with her but never spelled a word about this.
[Extra info: Rosemary, seemingly used to be another little naughty girl like Candy (with freckles when younger and also green eyes, but later grown into a real beauty; our hope for Candy, no?). Kind of rebellious too. She fell in love with the sailor Brown (later Anthony's dad). Due to the objection of Ardlay's family, she ran away with Brown. But then finally got accepted by the family. When Anthony was about 5-year old, she passed away. Brown seldom came back due to Grandma Elroy the witch. It was also painful for him to see Anthony who looked exactly like his mom.]
Then, George hid all his love for Rosemary and that was why he was always single. And, because of his love for Rosemary, he would do anything to protect and help her only brother, Albert.
Note:
Well, George was the one who helped Candy greatly while she was forced to marry Neil. So, it is good to know more about him.
Duty of Albert for Ardlay Family
Since his dad passed away when he was still a boy, Albert, being the only direct heir of Ardlay family had a tough situation. Considering the family's business image, customer trust, etc, Grandma Elroy and all other old Ardlay heads had agreed to hide the truth about having a young family head like Albert. Grandma Elroy was in charge of raising up Albert but he was under direct care of George. An image of Grandpa William was created.
Soon all the old Ardlay heads who knew about Albert's identity passed away. Grandma Elroy and George were the only two persons left who were aware of the truth.
Grandma Elroy was very strict with Albert. Kind of raising him up just to be a great family head. Albert was lacking of love especially after Rosemary's death.
How did Albert appear as the Prince of Hill? (Wow!!!!!)
Once during his teenage (guess around 14 to 16 years old), the Ardlay family held a family party by Lakewood. Kids at this age were sensible and sensitive sometimes. While watching kids of his age dancing and playing music in their traditional Scottish costume, Albert wanted so much to join the group! He dressed himself up in the traditional costume with the Andrew medallion and hang his bagpipe across his shoulder. Just when he wanted to join the group, Grandma Elroy found him out! He was scolded by this old witch. So, the young Albert was very sad and mad. He then took his car and drove his way up to the neighborhood of Pony's hill!
(Note: I know some teenagers could drive at young age like 14 or 15 too. Assuming here the road code was quite loose in the States around that time.)
Upon arriving at Pony's, Albert went up to the hill and tried to think over his life. He wondered what he should do for his life…..freedom? family duty? At the same time, there was our little 6-year old cutie Candy crying over the letter from Annie…..
Attracted by this little angel, Albert approached Candy and tried to cheer her up by playing the bagpipe. Just as they were talking to each other, Albert saw George who had been chasing after him and looking for him! Albert immediately hid himself up….the wind blew away Candy's letter and when she turned her head over, Albert was gone already…but she found the medallion….
[ Note: I did NOT get the precise info here about how the medallion was left by Albert. Did he do it intentionally or it dropped off by accident? But for sure that Albert remembered that he lost or gave his medallion on the hill that day to that little angel.]
Then, Albert met George. He saw the worrying tears from George! A crying face turning into a smiling face from Candy, and a serious face turning into a crying face from George….all these caused the young Albert to ponder deep into his thoughts….it seemed that it was that moment that Albert had realized about his duty for Ardlay family….
Note:
The mystery long lost is solved for us! This was how Albert had came to the Pony's Hill and how he had met Candy!
When did Albert decide to adopt Candy?
When Candy almost got drowned by the waterfall, it was Albert to save her. While falling from the waterfall, the medallion hanging across her neck dropped off her collar and that caught Albert's eyes immediately. At that time, Candy was 12-year old. Her look was not much changed. With the medallion plus her look, Albert knew at once she was the little angel he met on the Pony's Hill years ago. Candy's kindness, green eyes, his feelings of being close to her as lonely folks, her suffers at Leagan's, as well as letters from his three nephews (Anthony, Stear and Archie)…..Albert had thus decided to adopt Candy at that time.
Note:
Many remarks teasing about Albert's weak memory like he couldn't even remember about meeting Candy on the Pony's Hill were totally out thanks to this important fact! And this also tell us that Albert had always remembered about his encounter with Candy except during his memory loss.
Why did Albert go to London?
Remember that Albert told Candy that he had to go somewhere right after consoling her over Anthony's death? In fact, it was that time that Albert had to start assuming some of his family duty. Ardlay family was starting some new business in London. He was going there to handle this. Since he was very worried about Candy's condition after Anthony's death, he thus decided to send Candy to St. Paul's College so that he could take care of her (in the dark).
Since this was the first time he started to work for the family from the minimum level, Albert wanted to keep a large part of being himself. Thus, he decided to work a bit at the Blue River Zoo. His schedule was tough between family business affair and the zoo job.
When the family business was going on track in London, Albert decided to go for a trip in Africa. There, he searched for freedom, and indulged himself into the liberty and wildlife of Africa….he cut away his contact with the Ardlay family including George during his trip in Africa.
What happened in Italy?
In the manga, we were told that Albert joined the guerilla force in Italy for the World War. But, in the original story by Mizuki-sensei, there wasn't such thing at all! Probably the illustrator had added up some of her own false interpretation. Anyway, the original story was that Albert realized that he had to, no matter what, return to Chicago to assume his family role despite the freedom he longed for. Thus, he left Africa to Italy (Note: taking a train probably to reach a harbor somewhere to board on a ship to America). It was so happened that there was a spy on the train he took! The explosion blew off his memory…. "Chicago" was the only murmur in his dream during his amnesia. By fate and miracle, Albert was sent back to the Chicago hospital where Candy was working in!
Why did Albert reveal his identity of being the Prince of Hill so late?
In the beginning, Albert did not want to reveal his identity as the Prince of Hill because he thought that the ideal image of the "prince" should be someone around the age of Anthony, i.e. around 14-16. He did NOT wish to break the sweet dream of Candy.
