WB can't please everyone, right? That's fans' problem for being ignorant about the first Thundercats' origin. Well, the original itself is "Anime-Shon" to begin with. The way it was animated, it was totally different breed from likes of He-man and other Saturday morning hero shows. Visually, the FX animation is Japanese style; animators used shadow shapes; animation depicted agility and speed. For character designs, we all know that just about every young Japanese animator in 80's drew things in detail and realistic fashion. Right now, we are in 2010's and things have changed. No one in the US is providing Japanese with pre-established model sheets other than pretty concept art paintings. "Anime-look" is just a cartooning design where things get exaggerated and simplified. Or it gets complicated, depends on how you see. It's ever going cycle of changes.
Speaking of the cycle, I was surprised by The Simpsons' animation having shadow shapes. Since Koreans can't deviate from the model, so they found another way to express themselves perhaps?
Well, I think those people are biased due to tunnel vision they've developed, which I think is a normal phase for them. Also the story standard in American TV animation takes blame too. Being edgy doesn't make story better. It's all about creating convincing characters which audience can empathize with. Once those characters marry with good plot, then it becomes an excellent story. Honestly, I'm not too fond of many anime titles because they over-rely on set character archetypes and unconvincing plot and unimaginative setting. I'm not to fond of stereotypical Manga style designs either.
I think this is a wonderful opportunity for writers to present well written epic story. They are taking full advantage of generational franchise which only repeats once and they shouldn't be bounded by some narrow minded censorship hawks. For visual parts, I wish I knew if Studio 4°C is doing the storyboard and who is directing the series. When I commented that the visual reminded me of Saturday morning cartoon, I felt that direction lacked visual flair that makes Japanese animation a sight to see. For example, I wasn't too impressed with art direction because it didn't have incredibly detailed world designs to create that epic feeling.
